Over the last few years, global energy demand has risen, and this trend is expected to continue. Almost all European Union (EU) countries are suffering from a shortage of energy services. Annually, EU fossil fuel energy production falls; for example, in 2014, gas production fell by 11.2% compared to 2013. Energy imports, especially natural gas, have increased as a result of lower energy output. The EU is still heavily reliant on fossil fuel imports (oil and gas), and the cost of EU energy imports in 2017 increased by 26% (€266 billion).

Hospital and medical wastes are disposed in tens of thousands of dedicated incinerators or are autoclaved to destroy pathogens and then landfilled. However, over a hundred cities which have waste to energy (WTE) power plants fueled by municipal solid waste, use these plants to co-combust medical wastes. This report identified forty one such plants, located in a dozen nations, which in total co-combust about 90,000 tons of medical waste annually. The medical waste represented an average of 2.4% of the total amount of wastes combusted in these WTE power plants. Generally, the medical wastes are collected at the point of origin in puncture resistant, leakproof and sealed containers which are transported to WTE plants and are mechanically conveyed to the WTE furnace.

A team of waste experts from the digital waste marketplace Cyrkl has published a guide aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of large companies and reducing their waste management costs. The first company out of many can save 230 000 EUR on closed-loop recycling of plastic boxes, the second earns 534 000 EUR a year by crushing cables. What other numbers does Cyrkl share in the publication? And why does waste management help during the crisis?

Relevant information about MW composition and proper forecasting of MW composition is crucial for relevant technical and economical modelling and business planning in the field of waste management. These include techno-economical models of MW treatment units, e.g. sorting line, transfer station, energy recovery, waste collection and transport or a regional waste collection and treatment system modelling (Kropáč et al. 2018) and complex business models concerning specific investments in waste management. In this context, there is a project under the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic.

A report by Ecologic Institute and Climact shows that the draft National Energy and Climate Plans presented by governments at the start of 2019 are in acute need of improvement. They suffer from inadequate targets and insufficient details on the policies and financing needed to move towards net-zero emission economies in Europe. Member States also need to do better in involving their national stakeholders in providing input to the plans, to benefit from their expertise and to get them on board for future policies. Good practice examples exist around the EU to serve as inspiration for the final plans due by the end of the year.

We are proud to announce start of preparation of the WtERT- Czech web page. It will contain important information from Czech Republic in the field of waste management and also technical information from abroad (preferably from other WtERT group members). The Czech Republic needs to advance sustainable waste management, especially in the area of thermal conversion of wastes and energy utilization.

This annual report summarizes WtERT-Germany's activities, like the outcome of the website's relaunch, our consultancy projects in Croatia and Tunisia as well as hosting/delegation of guests in 2018. In addition, it gives a glimpse of what we are about to do in 2019.

The contribution is focused on the current issues of Czech municipal waste managment (WM). Development in this area is related both to the set goals and commitments in the Czech and EU waste management, as well as to circular economy transition ideas formulated in Circular Economy Package.

Residual waste of municipal origin and similar industrial waste are usually treated in thermal waste treatment plants. The primary focus of thermal treatment is the environmentally friendly and efficient use of the energy contained in this type of waste.

Since 2003 methane biooxidation for the municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills has come to the interests of researchers, biofilters started to be significantly installed.

This Study to assess the implementation by EU Member States of certain provisions of Directive 1999/31/EC on the landfill of waste, carried out for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment (DG Environment), investigates the situation in the 28 Member States of the European Union (EU) as regards the landfilling of untreated non-hazardous municipal solid waste.

The Czech Republic currently strives to comply with its obligations towards EU biowaste management requirements. The decisive Council Directive 1999/31/EC on the landfill of waste obliges all the EU member states, including the Czech Republic, to drastically reduce landfilling of biodegradable wastes or biodegradable municipal waste.

The Czech Republic is now preparing the new complete revision of waste law. The transformation of the waste management into the circular economy started through the legislative process in June 2016. Waste management plan of the Czech Republic for 2015 to 2024 clearly specifies waste strategy and priorities for the country. Thus, in the Act on waste the ban on landfilling of recyclable and recoverable waste in 2024, obligatory separate collection of main municipal waste streams including biowaste since 2015 and currently proposed increase of waste landfilling tax with strict recycling targets already in 2018 are only the first milestones leading to smarter waste future in the Czech Republic.

Waste utilization has the potential of savings in using fossil fuels. In the Czech Republic, three incinerators of municipal waste are operating currently, there are many projects for implementation of others; unfortunately, they usually fail to succeed due to the economic evaluation. Support for the construction of new facilities for thermal treatment of waste is practically non-existent. Apparently, this could be solved through a number of alternative approaches – combined combustion, processing of sorted waste; however, a conceptual solution is still missing. The article aims to present the current situation and potential for the future.
