China Everbright International Limited has secured a $100 million loan from the Asian Development Bank to develop a series of waste to energy plants in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. This initiative will be the first municipal waste to energy public-private partnership project in the country.

Vietnam: Director of the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Nguyen Toan Thang said at a conference calling for investment in WTE that with the annual growth rate of 5 percent per annum, total domestic garbage in the city would reach 13,000 tons a day by 2025.

About 400 waste incineration boilers with a total incineration capacity of approx. 45,000 tons of waste per hour exist in Germany today. Germany is well provided with waste-to-energy plants, there is no demand for further Expansion currently. The same applies to RDF-(refuse-derived-fuel) plants: the incineration capacity to utilize RDF is sufficient for its production in Germany.

The global trade of products that occurs since some years ago is directly related with the chemical flows. For example, products produced in China are sold in the USA and then recycled in Vietnam. This flow of material involves a movement of chemicals at the same global scale since the differents products that are traded (plastic toys, textiles, electronic appliances, paper, etc.) incorporate different chemical additives. These chemicals are added to the products in order to give them certain desired properties: flame resistance, protection to UV light, conductivity, color, etc. Therefore, many potential hazardous compounds are traded as chemicals or incorporated as additives in products.

The largely unregulated waste management poses grave problems in many Asian cities. The need to organize waste management systematically and communicate this to people requires a lot of awareness training, good networking, a clear focus on results and a great deal of patience. Key individuals on all levels must be involved in order to increase acceptance among the population. The Technologie-Transfer-Zentrum, ttz (Technology Transfer Centre, ttz) in Bremerhaven, Germany, is aiming to develop and locally implement a realizable model with 21 partners from Europe and Asia, within the EU project ISSOWAMA (Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Asia). The project was officially launched in Bangkok on February 11 and 12.

In this article, we assess the future prospects of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) from the perspective of a developing country, drawing on Vietnam as a case study. First, we review the performance of the CDM and describe the evolution of carbon markets on the path towards a post-2012 climate regime. Next, we place Vietnam in a post-2012 context, and assess potential project resources, challenges, and opportunities that could arise for the country from a future climate policy framework. Our analysis suggests that the CDM should remain in place and be improved to facilitate more meaningful participation by developing countries in climate mitigation efforts beyond 2012. Finally, the article sets out eight proposals that could help improve the CDM as the world progresses towards a new international climate policy framework.

We measured accumulation of 21 trace elements in blood cockles, Anadara spp., collected from the South Key Economic Zone, Mekong River Delta (MRD), and Central Coastal Zone (CCZ) in Vietnam. Concentrations of As, Sr, Mo, Sn and Pb were higher in CCZ blood cockle than in those from the other two regions, whereas Hg concentration was elevated in MRD samples.

The report warns of the staggering amount of mismanaged plastic waste generated and urges action to tackle this important problem.

Recently, urbanization in Vietnam has been increasing, thus the dramatic increase in consumption and demand for plastics in consumer packaging, construction, household goods, and automotive industries.

Looking for a suitable municipal waste management’s method for town and district is an important task for Vietnam. In such areas the generated waste amount is not big and waste service hardly joins to the public Urban Environment Company’s system, due to a high cost of transportation. In this case, therefore a private company, the Hydraulic- Machine Co., LTD has developed an appropriate technology made in Vietnam. This technology uses for “Treatment of Solid Waste into Fuels” (MBT-CD.08), which has got the Certification of Vietnam Technology Ownership and it is being on the way of extend its application throughout the country. Schematic diagram of the MBT-CD.08, material flow, heat value of the RDF product and the emission as well as scientific comments were reported. The presented feasibility study outlines those options by describing their technical concept (i.e. substrate supply, process and facilities, construction), energy utilization and distribution aspects.

Within the context of the EU programme “EU-ASEAN Energy Facility” the project “RENEW” was carried though by an international team from scientific institutes in Vietnam, Greece and Germany. Aim of the project was the development of practice-oriented guidelines for conducting feasibility studies into the production of renewable energy from waste materials in ASEAN countries taking the island of Phu Quoc/ Vietnam as a model.

Solid waste management is a major responsibility of local governments. It is a difficult task because it depends upon organization and cooperation between households, communities, private enterprises, and municipal authorities. It is also dependent upon the selection and application of appropriate technical solutions for waste collection, transfer, recycling and disposal. Waste management has important consequences for public health and well-being, and the quality and sustainability of the urban environment. Unfortunately, waste management services in many developing countries are inadequate; a large part of the population does not have access to a waste collection service and only a small fraction of the generated waste is actually collected.

Leachate can be defined as a substance that permeates through solid waste layers in landfill which bring some soluble substances or suspended substances (Tchobanoglous etal., 1993). In most of landfill, leachate includes liquid going into landfill from out sources, such as surface water, rain fall, underground water and liquid generated from decomposition process of wastes.

In the past decade, strong economic growth and uncontrolled urbanization have greatly magnified the problems with Vietnam’s solid waste management system, pushing waste management to the forefront of environmental challenges with which it must contend. Not only has there been an increase in the amounts of waste generated, the composition of the waste has changed as well.

Hochiminh city is the biggest economical, industrial, commercial, export and service center of Vietnam. Thanks to the advantage of the geographical position, climate, soil, land and waterway transportation systems, Hochiminh city obtains the highest economic development rate (12 – 15%/year) of the country. The city has become the main force for not only the Southern Major Economic Region but for the whole country, too.

Over the last 10 years considerable pressure has been put on the natural environment in Vietnam due to the rate of industrial and urban development, rapid increases in population and the need for additional food, energy, transport and construction activities.
